ENVIRONMENTAL PREVENTION STRATEGIES

A preventive initiative to increase awareness and education, knowledge of the risks and consequences of drug use, and information on ways the communities can help in our goals to decrease the availability and consumption of alcohol and drugs in our county. Examples of strategies include:

Education and Mass Media Strategy - Uses a variety of media tools such as newspaper advertisements, editorials, PSA, static cinema and billboard ads to influence people's perception of a behavior such as underage drinking.

Counter advertising / marketing - Disseminate information on the hazards or risks of underage drinking.

Enhance knowledge - Build the skills of parents and youth so they will be able to analyze and evaluate advertising and media messages.

Notices and warnings in alcohol establishments that give information about the legal, social and health effects of alcohol use.

Public Policy, Laws and Regulations Strategy - Develop and enhance local policies and regulations. Examples:

  1. Written school and worksite policies on alcohol, tobacco and drugs that reflect fair and comprehensive practices.
  2. Support training opportunities for alcohol beverage servers, including employees at convenience stores and restaurants.

Compliance Strategy - Partner with local law enforcement and other agencies to support appropriate environmental strategies for underage drinking enforcement. Example: information to adults on the social host laws.

Anyone interested can take a role in reducing the use of alcohol by young people under 21 by engaging in the following general environmental strategies in your work or community:

  • Clear, consistent no-use messages
  • Limit access of alcohol to youth
  • Partner with state and local key stakeholders to address issues related to underage drinking
  • Implement science-based programs and practices in both our school and community settings
