PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAMS

These programs can be implemented in the school or community setting. For details on the delivery and implementation recommendations please email one of our Prevention Educators or call the office.

SCIENCE BASED PROGRAMS:

Life Skills Training (G. Botvin) - Drug prevention program for elementary and middle school students. Topics include self image, decision making, information on the gateway drugs, advertising, communication and social skills.

Parenting Wisely - Individualized self-paced program through a CD-ROM that gives parents strategies and information to respond to children's behaviors and help in everyday interactions. Participants view scenarios on typical parenting issues. The parent then views solution scenarios on both ineffective and effective responses. The estimated time to complete the program is 3-4 hours.

Project Alert (RAND) - A program for middle school students developed to reduce the onset of drug use, motivate students against use, and teach skills to help resist pro-drug pressures. Topics include: short term consequences on the gateway drugs, social pressures, understanding advertisements and the benefits of being drug free.

Reconnecting Youth - A program developed for high school students and offered as part of the school's curriculum. RY was designed for students who are at higher risk for dropping out of school. The program is implemented for an entire semester. The major goals of the program include:

  1. increase school achievement
  2. decrease emotional distress, and
  3. decrease drug involvement

Two components that make this program effective are the small group peer support and life skills training modules.
