Our
annual Dime Carnival has been implemented and coordinated by our
Prevention Department for 15 years. The Carnival is now seen as
a major agency event that promotes awareness on substance abuse
and the goals of prevention. While the Carnival has taken place
in varying locations, it has been well received by the community.
The Carnival is comprised of 25 games / activities with messages
aimed at children (pre K-5) and their families. At each station,
a poster displays a prevention message and the participants either
read or hear the message from the volunteers.
Youth
and adult volunteers come from the community and many Livingston
County organizations including the Sheriff's office, Livingston
County Probation, Livingston County District Attorney, Livingston
County Youth Bureau and Summer Youth Employment, Livingston County
Dept. of Health, Business Education Alliance (BEA), Hillside,
Foster Grandparents (Office of the Aging), Chances and Changes
and many more. For a 2-hour carnival we typically need 60+ volunteers
for a smooth running event. If you are interested in volunteering
for this year's event, please call (585) 243-9236.
The
Carnival has many special features including a remembrance T-shirt
for all of our volunteers as a token of our thanks. In the last
few years, the message for the front of the T-shirts has been
created by students. The students who participate in our Red Ribbon
creativity contests for 3-5 grade design a T-shirt The grand prize
winner's design is adapted for the front of the T-shirt
We are
very grateful to our T-shirt sponsors that provide monetary contributions
towards the printing costs and to Special Tee's for working with
us to adapt the student's art work. In 2007 our sponsors were: Children's
Protective Association, Livingston County Board of Supervisors,
Thompkins Insurance Agencies, Inc., and Special Tee's. |
